This 1930s townhouse, located along a scenic canal in central Rotterdam, has been completely transformed into a colorful and inviting city retreat. The redesign carefully blends the home’s historic charm with modern interior sensibilities, creating a balanced living environment that feels both expressive and timeless.
The starting point for the design was the original stained glass windows found in the sliding doors and throughout the façade. These graphic, colorful details inspired the overall interior palette and set the tone for the rest of the concept.
To contrast the structured, linear architecture of the 1930s, we introduced furniture with smooth, organic forms. Curved silhouettes and rounded edges soften the space and create a flowing, comfortable feel throughout the home.
Color is central to the identity of this project. Soft sage greens, deep burgundies, warm ochres, and dusty pinks—all drawn from the stained glass—are layered on neutral bases. These colors shape the atmosphere in each room while maintaining coherence across the entire house.
The interior is both playful and refined, built up from a rich mix of materials and textures: soft velvets, tactile wood, woven textiles, and hand-applied wall finishes. This layering approach creates depth, comfort, and a strong sense of personality.
Artisanal details bring the finishing touch—handmade ceramics, sculptural lighting, and custom decorative objects infuse each room with warmth and individuality.
The final result is a unique transformation of a historic home into a modern sanctuary—a harmonious blend of past and present, where bold color, softness, and thoughtful craftsmanship come together.
