In the heart of Kralingen, one of Rotterdam’s most charming and distinguished neighborhoods, you’ll find Calaboose – a vibrant culinary hotspot with an unmistakable Indonesian soul. Housed in a beautifully preserved historic building, Calaboose is the result of a creative collaboration between two of the city’s most successful hospitality entrepreneurs: Satéman, celebrated for his authentic Indonesian street food, and Dr., one of Rotterdam’s most acclaimed cocktail bars.

The concept for Calaboose grew from the richness and depth of Indonesian cuisine, serving as the guiding inspiration for both the menu and the design. The goal was clear: to create a warm, inviting space that subtly nods to Indonesia’s culture and atmosphere—without leaning on clichés or overly traditional interpretations.

At the heart of the interior stands the cocktail bar—both physically and conceptually. It serves as the central stage, highlighting that cocktails are as integral to the Calaboose experience as the food itself. Guests are encouraged to sit at the bar, engage with skilled bartenders, and watch the craft unfold, blurring the boundaries between kitchen and bar.

The interior palette is rich in warmth and texture. Deep earthy tones, tactile surfaces, and layered materials create a grounded yet dynamic atmosphere. Textured wall finishes, woven rattan chair backs, and natural wood elements all contribute to the cohesive design.

To add a touch of understated glamour, subtle brass details are incorporated into the lighting fixtures, and the bar top—finished in a warm reddish-brown with delicate sparkling specks—catches the light in a way that elevates the entire space without overwhelming it.

Indonesian influences are woven throughout in the form of curated artwork, sculptural elements, and lush greenery. Towards the rear of the restaurant, guests can enjoy dining beneath a canopy of tropical plants, with views of the open kitchen where satay is grilled over real charcoal—just like in Indonesia.

Even the restrooms are part of the immersive experience, designed to feel like stepping into a lush jungle. Layered greenery, rich materials, and textural finishes transform this often-overlooked space into a memorable part of the visit.
