Calaboose is an Indonesian themed restaurant and cocktailbar in the very heart of Kralingen, an old neighbourhood in Rotterdam.
Indonesian cuisine was the starting point for the design of the restaurant and cocktailbar. We chose a palet of warm and inviting colours and materials. The bar where the cocktails are made is the central point of the restaurant. People can eat and drink at the bar and watch the shakers work their magic.
The colours and materials are warm, inviting and tactile. From the walls with structured paints to the rattan backs of the chairs and barstools, everything works well together to create a layered design.
In the execution we balanced the earthy feel with a hint of glamour by using brass lighting and a countertop for the bar with a deep red-brown colour with gold glitter. Throughout the interior we’ve added a variety of Indonesian artefacts, such as artworks and statues.
On the other side of the restaurant customers can sit at the bar under a canopy of exotic plants, where the saté is authentically grilled in front of them.
The unisex toilets are designed as an integral part of the whole design concept. They give the customers the idea they are outside in a jungle filled with exotic plants.
