MONUMENTAL TOWNHOUSE SCHIEDAM

This dream of a house was also a dream of a project. With full carte blanche from our clients, we set out to create a fun, colourful and highly personal home for them and their two children. The result is an interior that balances classic architectural heritage with modern design aesthetics—layering colours, textures and both design classics and contemporary pieces into one coherent and harmonious whole.

This was no small renovation—it was a total transformation of a 450 m² property listed as a national monument. Respecting its rich history, we preserved the original architectural elements, restoring them with great care. At the same time, we subtly developed these features further by integrating state-of-the-art modern technology throughout the home. The result is a house that retains its soul, yet is fully equipped to last another hundred years.

For the interior palette, we opted for a calm, light and neutral base to create a sense of openness and timelessness. In contrast, we completely drenched certain rooms in deep, saturated tones such as midnight blue and aubergine—immersive colour experiences that envelop you as soon as you step inside. In the lighter, more serene spaces, these bold hues reappear in accents, textiles and artworks, creating a visual dialogue between the rooms.

We embraced the interplay between old and new, combining the home’s classical details—ornate mouldings, original woodwork, grand proportions—with striking, contemporary statement pieces. Carefully chosen lighting fixtures become sculptural focal points, while unique furniture items add personality and flair. This approach ensures that the historic character of the house is never overshadowed, but rather enhanced by its modern counterparts.

From grand entertaining spaces to intimate family corners, every area was designed to be both elegant and functional. The overall effect is a home that celebrates its architectural legacy while fully embracing the comfort, innovation and creativity of contemporary living.

This was more than a renovation—it was the creation of a future-proof heritage home where history, design and daily life come together in perfect harmony.
