In a peaceful residential area just outside Rotterdam, Studio van der Poort designed the interior of a newly built family home. While the property followed a standard layout—with the living room at the front and the kitchen at the back—we saw an opportunity to make the space far more functional and distinctive.
One common challenge in such layouts is the underutilised central zone between the living room and kitchen. To solve this, we created a multifunctional ‘middle zone’ that now serves as a feature area. It combines built-in cabinetry with display shelves for art objects and books, and includes a cosy seating nook. This not only adds character but also provides generous storage for daily household items.
We also made a bold decision: relocating the kitchen from the front of the house to the rear, directly connected to the garden. The homeowners frequently host large dinners for family and friends, and their wish for a spacious, sociable kitchen drove this transformation. Now, cooking, dining, and entertaining flow seamlessly into the outdoor space.
The colour palette was inspired by a cherished family artwork, forming the basis of the design concept. We chose saturated hues such as moss green and rich brown tones, layered with a mix of warm, tactile materials. Together, these create a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere that feels luxurious without being overly formal.
The result is a home that combines functionality with personality: clever use of space, tailored to the needs of its owners, wrapped in a warm, rich aesthetic. It’s a place where family life and entertaining come together effortlessly.
